ARLINGTON, Va. – For the third time in less than a week, the Christopher Newport men's basketball team claimed a Capital Athletic Conference victory, defeating Marymount Saturday afternoon, 68-58.
With the win, the Captains improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. It is the first time a CNU squad has started the season with six straight wins since the 2001-2002 season when the Captains went on to finish 23-5.
It certainly wasn't easy for the Captains. The game was tied at the half, 28-28, and was a back-and-forth physical contest to the end.
"That was a Capital Athletic Conference game for you," Head Coach
John Krikorian said following the road triumph. "It was scrappy and hotly contested and what we're going to see all year long. I give a lot of credit to Marymount, they had a good game plan for today. We were fortunate to make more plays in the second half and get out of here with the win."
The game at Verizon Sports Arena was marred by foul trouble on both ends of the floor, and was deep into the second half before junior forward
Tim Daly and his teammates settled into a rhythm on the offensive end of the floor. Daly scored nine of his 13 points in the second half and collected 13 rebounds to register his first double-double of the season.
"Changing the momentum of the game was a big key for our team today," Krikorian continued. "That's the golden ticket for a good team. Not having to settle for a bad game. Maybe a bad half, but still being able to grind out a win when you aren't executing as well as you would like."
Sophomore
Aaron McFarland led the Captains in scoring for the second straight game, posting 17 points. McFarland was coming off a career-high 27 in Wednesday night's home triumph over Salisbury.
Fellow sophomore
Marcus Carter was defended well by the Saints and held to 4 of 14 shooting, but still managed to finish with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Junior
Kevin Regimbal hit two key three-pointers early in the second half and also ended up in double digits with 11 points for the game.
The Captains, ranked 21
st in the nation this week, out-rebounded the Saints, 50-28, and have now out-rebounded all six opponents this season.
Christopher Newport made five three-pointers in each half and went 10 of 30 from beyond the arc. CNU's shooting improved as the game progressed as the Captains ended up at 39 percent (23 of 59) for the day. The first half saw both teams shoot around 30 percent, but the Captains made 14 of 29 in the second stanza to end up at 39 percent while the Saints shot 33 percent (18 of 54) for the afternoon.
Marymount, now 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the CAC, was led by D'Ondre Stockman's 17 points. Jesse Longmire added 16 and Dmitri Rucker posted 15. The Saints had beaten the Captains in Arlington the last two years. MU lost its point guard, Michael Anderson, to an apparent knee injury in the first two minutes of the game and did not return.
Christopher Newport now has a week off as student-athletes face final exams. The Captains return to the court next Sunday, December 13
th, when they travel to Norfolk to take on Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
