Box Score in HTML FormatROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Captains knocked down seven of their first ten shots in the first quarter, racing out to an early 12-point lead over Ferrum College (1-2) in the Jean Edge Classic, and the defense took over from there. The CNU women's basketball team dropped the Panthers, 59-37, improving to 3-0 on the season with a stout defensive effort, forcing 37 turnovers and grabbing 28 steals.
Facing off against their former conference rivals for the first time since the 2014 NCAA Tournament, the Captains led from wire-to-wire for the second straight game. A hot start saw CNU go 7-for-10 to start the game, building a 12-point advantage at 16-4. Sophomore
Sam Porter scored the first six points, including a pair of fast-break layups after steals, in what would prove to be an early theme for the Captains.
Porter picked up two more steals in the first three minutes of action, followed by back-to-back three-pointers from
Bailey Dufrene and
Makenzie Fancher.
Devon Byrd and
Jalynn Ponzo each added steals, and Byrd raced to the basked for the easy up-and-in on the fast break. The last bucket of the surge came with 3:26 remaining in the opening quarter, when
Makeda Wright found rookie
Jessica Daguilh under the rim for a layup.
The scorching first quarter would continue, with CNU building the lead to 15 before the end of the frame, at 24-9. The Captains had 15 of their first 24 points off of turnovers, and eight came on the fast break. Defensively, CNU allowed just nine points in the first ten minutes, picking up eight steals and holding Ferrum to just 4-of-11 shooting.
Things cooled slightly in the second quarter offensively, but the Captains defense continued pressuring the Panthers and allowed just nine second quarter points. CNU carried a 33-18 advantage into the locker room after shooting 43.3% from the field. Porter continued her dominating defense, collecting seven steals in the first half while leading the team in scoring, with nine points.
With a comfortable lead, the Captains' smothering defense held off Ferrum in the second half, giving up just 19 points on 7-of-27 shooting. Led by Porter, who matched her career-high with eight steals, the Captains finished with 28 thefts. Eight different players registered at least two steals in the game, including three each from
Anitra Thomas,
Zhara Tannor, Fancher and Ponzo.
Devon Byrd added four while Dufrene and
Jasmine Bonivel each chipped in a pair.
CNU scored 32 of its 59 total points off of turnovers, including 18 fast-break points. The lead would grow to as many as 26, with 6:18 remaining in the 4th quarter. Thomas was 3-for-3 off the bench for the Captains, finishing with eight points, while Porter added a team-high 14 points to go with her eight steals and six rebounds. Ponzo was 4-for-9 from the field with nine points, three steals and one rebound.
As a team, the Captains shot 35.4% from the floor, with six made three-pointers. Ferrum managed to shoot just 29.8% against the CNU defense, going 14-for-47 from the field with just two made three's on 17 attempts. Zarkia Mattox led the way for the Panthers, scoring 15 points with eight rebounds.
The Jean Edge Classic will conclude on Sunday, as the Captains take on the host North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops (2-0), coming off a win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, 66-54. Tip is scheduled for 4:00 pm and live stats will be available.
