Men's Basketball Opens Season Sunday...Captains Host Lynchburg at the Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- A new season begins Sunday for the Christopher Newport men's basketball team. The Captains host Lynchburg College in a non-conference game at the Freeman Center, with tipoff set for 4:00 p.m. It will mark the start of the 49th season of CNU men's basketball, and the first of 25 regular-season games.

Sunday's matchup will also be the 20th meeting all-time of the squads, with the Hornets holding a 12-7 advantage. The Captains will look to avenge a 90-66 defeat last season at Lynchburg.

CNU earlier this week was picked as the pre-season favorite in the Capital Athletic Conference for 2015-16. The league released its pre-season poll of coaches on Wednesday, and CNU received eight first-place votes and a total of 80 points to be the top pick. Salisbury, last year's champion, is picked second followed by St. Mary's in the third spot.

John Krikorian is beginning his sixth season on the CNU bench. and returns a veteran group consisting of 15 returners and just three newcomers. CNU was 20-8 last season and advanced to the CAC title game at Salisbury.

Seniors Hunter Wetherell and Connor Laframboise are expected to lead the charge, followed by an outstanding class of juniors that includes returning starters Kevin Regimbal, Tim Daly, and Rayshard Brown.

The Captains also return the Rookie of the Year in the CAC a year ago, sophomore Marcus Carter, who topped the squad in scoring by averaging 13 points per game.

Sunday's action will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 3:40 p.m. Live audio and video will also be available of the game at CNUsports.com/live.
