CNU Football Travels to Southern Virginia for Season Finale Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport football squad looks to go out on a high note Saturday, as the Captains conclude the 2015 season. CNU has won two straight games, and the Captains travel to Buena Vista, Va., to take on Southern Virginia University in the season finale for both squads. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Fields of Southern Virginia.

Matt Kelchner's team is 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, but the Captains have rallied with back-to-back 12-point wins in the last two weeks. CNU posted a 51-39 victory at 18th-ranked Salisbury two weeks ago, and last week downed William Paterson, 42-30, on Senior Day at POMOCO Stadium.

"We've come a long way this season, and I'm very proud of the work this team has put in," Kelchner said. "This is a great group of young men and they've stayed together through some tough moments. Because of their hard work, we've shown improvement, and we need to keep it going this week and finish strong."

It will be the first meeting ever with the Knights. SVU is 0-9 this season and 0-8 in the NJAC, but don't think that means anything to Kelchner.

"Anything can happen in this league, and we can't look past anybody," Kelchner continued. "I know Southern Virginia would love to knock us off and end their season in a positive way. We've got to take care of our business and play hard and smart football."

Senior quarterback Tyler Quigley has been red hot for the Captains. The Burke, Va., native has completed 39 of 52 attempts the last two weeks for 620 yards, and is just the second quarterback in CNU history to record back-to-back 300-yard passing performances.

Junior wide receiver Taylor Loudan has caught 60 passes for 999 yards this season, including five touchdown receptions. Saturday he can become just the fourth CNU receiver to go over the 1,000-yard mark in a season.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. The broadcast will also be available at CNUsports.com/live.
