NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Another Saturday, another tough battle for the CNU football program. The Captains, mired in a six-game losing streak, have already taken on two Top 20 teams during the skid. This Saturday, it's a road trip to 18th-ranked Salisbury. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury, MD.
Matt Kelchner's squad is 1-6 overall and 1-5 in its first season in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. CNU has dropped Top 20 showdowns with fifth-ranked Wesley and Rowan, ranked 15th at the time. Last week, the Captains fell short in a 19-14 defeat at home to Frostburg State during Homecoming Weekend at CNU.
"We've been ahead in every game this year and just haven't done enough to stay ahead," Kelchner said. "It's a couple of plays or penalties in every game that are killing us at the worst possible time."
The Sea Gulls are riding a five-game winning streak and enter Saturday's clash with a 5-1 overall mark and a 5-0 record in NJAC play. Salisbury won on the road last Saturday, beating Kean in Union, New Jersey, 45-33. The Gulls have a prolific offense, and are averaging over 49 points per game. CNU's defense will be challenged from the opening kickoff.
"Our defense has been pretty good overall, they've just been on the field way too much," Kelchner said. "We need to play well on offense, defense, and special teams and put together a complete 60 minutes of football."
The meeting will be the 13th all-time, and Salisbury holds a 9-4 lead in the series. The schools, however, have split the six games played in the series at Sea Gull Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and on CNUsports.com/live. The pre-game show will begin at 12:30 p.m.
