NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football squad didn't allow a point after halftime Saturday night, but still fell to Frostburg State, 19-14. The Homecoming Weekend defeat at POMOCO Stadium was the sixth straight for the Captains, who dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
CNU opened the scoring with a first quarter touchdown, only to see Frostburg State score the next 19 points to take a 19-7 lead at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, the Captains managed just one fourth quarter score for the 19-14 final verdict.
The triumph for the Bobcats was their fifth straight, and FSU improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC.
"We've been through this a lot this year, and again we just didn't make enough plays to win the game," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said following the loss. "I have no problem with our work ethic...we are playing hard but just not doing enough to win games."
Senior quarterback
Tyler Quigley scored both CNU touchdowns, opening the scoring with a one-yard plunge in the first quarter and ending the scoring with a seven-yard run in the final stanza. Quigley has now scored four rushing touchdowns in the last two weeks for the Captains.
Freshman running back Gavin Lavat posted two scores for the Bobcats on runs of four and nine yards. Freshman quarterback Connor Cox also threw a 20-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Myles Burgess in the second quarter for what proved to be the game-winner.
Trailing by five in the fourth quarter, the Captains got the ball at midfield with just over ten minutes to play. CNU controlled the ball for the next six and a half minutes and ran 13 plays to advance the ball to the Frostburg 16 yard line. CNU could not cash in as the drive ended with two incomplete passes, and the Bobcats were able to run out the clock to hang on.
"We had a great opportunity in the fourth quarter to win the game, but just didn't make enough plays to get the job done," Kelchner continued. "They just made more plays than we did."
CNU junior wide receiver
Taylor Loudan caught five passes for 86 yards. On defense, senior linebacker Jusin McFadden led the Captains with a game-high 12 tackles. Sophomore linebacker
Brennan Gary made ten stops.
A crowd of 4,939 watched the Bobcats win the first conference meeting of the schools. FSU also won the only other meeting, a 33-31 victory in 2010 in non-conference play in Frostburg, MD.
CNU will travel to Salisbury, MD., next Saturday to take on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium. SU is 5-0 in NJAC play and 5-1 overall. The Gulls have won their last five games.
