NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- As Christopher Newport University celebrates the return of many familiar faces this weekend for Homecoming 2015, the CNU football squad entertains Frostburg State University for the first time ever. Saturday night at POMOCO Stadium, the Captains take on the Bobcats in New Jersey Athletic Conference action. Kickoff time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Christopher Newport has struggled and is mired in a five-game losing skid. The Captains are 1-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Head Coach
Matt Kelchner and his assistants have looked closely at the squad and have been working hard to remedy the situation.
"We've spent more time than ever before looking at game tapes, breaking down film and evaluating where the mistakes are being made," Kelchner said. "Our guys are working hard but the results haven't been there. We need to play a complete game and limit our mistakes, that's what it boils down to. Our team has reacted the right way, they've worked hard this week in practice and have a good attitude. It's just a matter of putting it all together."
While it's the first time the schools will meet in Newport News, it's the second meeting all-time.
Matt Kelchner's squad travelled to Frostburg, MD., on September 18th of 2010 for what was then a non-conference battle. The Bobcats emerged from the tilt with a 33-31 victory. Since that meeting more than five years ago, the Frostburg State program has gone through a coaching change and is on an upswing. Second-year Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald has his team riding a four-game winning streak, and the Bobcats are 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC.
Tickets for the game are still available, although all tailgate passes are sold out. On Saturday, tickets will go on sale outside POMOCO Stadium beginning at 5:00 p.m. and gates open at 6:00 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Live video will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
