Box Score in HTML FormatNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team extended its win streak to seven games on Wednesday night, defeating Salisbury University (10-4-1, 4-2-1) in a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference matchup. The Captains clinched a spot in the 2015 CAC Tournament with a 1-0 victory over the Sea Gulls, improving to 12-3-1 overall and 6-1-0 in CAC action.
The two teams took the field over an hour after the originally scheduled start time due to an extended overtime game in the front end of the CAC doubleheader between the men's teams. The Captains looked more comfortable early, pressuring Salisbury goalkeeper Alesha Seifert with several attempts in the first 11 minutes.
Salisbury would push back, challenging CNU goalkeeper
Carly Maglio, with a pair of chances in the 24th minute. Maglio, the CAC Defensive Player of the Week, dove to turn away Rachel Anderson's attempt while also picking off a header by Lindsay Andonian. CNU outshot the Sea Gulls, 8-3, in the first half, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on-goal.
In the second half, the Captains would get on the board in the 55th minute off a corner kick by
Lindsay Mondloch. The senior midfielder lofted a gorgeous cross into the box where rookie
Gabby Gillis headed a shot toward Seifert. The Salisbury keeper knocked the ball down, but the rebound rattled around the feet of a trio of Salisbury defenders before senior
Abby Johnson crashed through the play and poked it into the back of the open net. It was the first goal of the year for Johnson, and would hold up as the crucial gamewinner.
Facing a setback late, the Salisbury offense started to amp up the pressure in the later stages of the game. In the 69th minute, Logan O'Meara had one of the best looks of the evening for the Sea Gulls, but her hard shot was just high, soaring over the crossbar. The Sea Gulls managed just four shots on-frame in the game, with ten total attempts taken.
Maglio made four saves, picking up her fourth shutout of the season while improving her save percentage to 83% and her goals-against average to 0.81. She is now 8-2 in ten starts for the Captains this season.
CNU will return to action on Saturday, October 24 for Senior Day, as the Captains host Penn State Harrisburg at 1:30 pm. The schedule originally was set for a 1:00 pm kickoff, but the game has been moved back to 1:30 pm to account for an adjustment in the Homecoming events on campus.
