Box Score in HTML FormatNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday night, dropping a 2-0 decision to Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference play. CNU outshot the visiting Wolverines, 19-8, but was held scoreless for just the third time this season.
The Wolverines (8-6-1, 5-1-0) snapped the Captains' 22-game unbeaten streak as they fell to 10-1-4 overall, 3-1-2 in the league. CNU started the year unbeaten through the first 14 games of this season after closing out 2014 with eight straight games without a loss. The streak was the second longest active run in NCAA play and matched the record for the longest unbeaten roll in program history.
Wesley got on the board early, converting off a set piece from the middle of the field. Will Mileski took the free kick after a foul and lofted a perfect pass into the box, where Adrian Brice delivered a high-arcing header toward the back of the goal. With players from both team's crashing to get to the ball, it arced just enough to find paydirt for the Wolverines, pulling ahead 1-0 on the score.
The Wolverines tested CNU's rookie goalkeeper,
Zach Pedini, in the first half, putting three shots on goal in five total attempts. With just under four minutes remaining, the Captains' defense took a big hit when senior
Sean Christein was issued his second caution and forced CNU into a man-down situation for the rest of the match. While the offense started to put together some solid combinations despite the disadvantage, it left the CNU defense susceptible to the big play downfield. Wesley took advantage in the 64th minute.
As the Captains pushed forward, a loose ball found the feet of defender Kyle Jackson, who took a dribble and launched a long pass up the right side over the CNU defense. In a footrace, rookie Adrian Coverdale got to the ball first and needed to just beat Pedini for the score and delivered a hard liner into the back of the net to put Wesley up, 2-0.
Christopher Newport still had over 26 minutes of action to try and pull even, and had the memory of six come-from-behind efforts already this season in the back of their heads. Wesley goalkeeper, Zack Baker, was up to the task, however, making six second-half saves to keep the Captains off the board. CNU did score a goal once, on a nifty flick by
Sebastian Abrigo to the head of
Harry Nodwell, but offsides was called and the Captains goal nullified.
CNU held a significant advantage in corner kicks, 15-2, and outshot Wesley 12-3 in the second half, despite playing a man down. CNU put six shots on-goal after halftime, while Wesley managed just one.
Ryan Balfour and
Andrew Gogolin each chipped in three shots for the Captains, putting all three on-frame.Coverdale led with three attempts for the visitors, scoring on his only shot on-goal.
The Captains will return to action in a huge conference matchup on Wednesday, October 21, hosting 25th-ranked Salisbury University at 5:00 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action, at CNUsports.com/live.
