CNU Football Returns to New Jersey for Montclair State Matinee Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- For the second straight weekend, the Christopher Newport University football squad travels to the Garden State for New Jersey Athletic Conference action. The Captains, looking to snap a four-game losing skid, will take on the Red Hawks of Montclair State University. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Sprague Field in Montclair, New Jersey, for the first meeting ever of the two schools.

CNU is 1-4 overall and 1-3 in NJAC play. The Captains lost at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, last Saturday, 35-10. Montclair State enters Saturday's battle with a 2-3 overall mark and a 2-2 record in the NJAC. The Hawks won at Southern Virginia last week, 45-0.

For the Captains, minimizing mistakes will be the key.

"We've been really hurting ourselves at key moments," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "Last week we turned it over a couple of times and committed some terrible penalties that put us in a big hole in the second half. We have to play hard and smart to get back on track."

While it serves as small solace, the Captains can take heart in their opponents' success this season. The four squads that have beaten CNU boast an overall record of 16-4, and Wesley (5-0) and Rowan (4-1) are both ranked in the Top 25 in the country.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. You can also listen live on CNUsports.com/live.

Following Saturday's road game, CNU returns to POMOCO Stadium next week (October 24th) for a Homecoming matchup with Frostburg State. Kickoff time will be at 7:00 p.m.
