YORK, Pa.- Christopher Newport got the hot hand in the second half Saturday, and held off York College, 63-55, in Capital Athletic Conference play. The victory at Charles Wolf Gymnasium improved CNU's record to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the CAC.
"We definitely showed improvement in the second half, and that's what led to the win," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "It was important for us to get back on track and avoid a slump at this point in the season."
The Captains, who suffered an overtime loss at Southern Virginia on Wednesday, trailed at the half Saturday, 28-27, after shooting just 35 percent in the opening stanza (10 of 29 overall and three of 16 from three-point range). Christopher Newport came out of the locker room and quickly showed a different side, downing early three-pointers to grab the lead.
CNU jumped out to a 13-point lead, 48-35, on an
Aaron McFarland triple with 11:43 to play. McFarland, who scored just two points in the opening half, drilled a trio of threes in the second half to finish with 11 points.
York, now 4-15 overall and 3-9 in the CAC, bounced back and made things interesting down the stretch. The Spartans, led by sophomore Tyler Alcid's 12 points, chipped away at the lead. Despite its comeback efforts, York could get no closer than five, 54-49.
The Captains were led by McFarland and fellow freshman
Brendon Burrows, who both finished with 11.
"Brendon has been giving us some good minutes," Krikorian continued. "He has a good sense of how to attack zone defenses and got to the line a lot today." Burows made five of six foul shots for the day.
Senior
Mike Cherry, sophomore
Kevin Regimbal and freshman
Marcus Carter all registered eight points in the well-balanced scoring attack.
CNU ended up making seven of 15 three-point attempts in the second half, and finished the game 10 of 31 from beyond the arc. The Captains out-rebounded the Spartans, 34-27, led again by McFarland and Burrows with six each.
Sophomore
Tim Daly finished recorded seven points, and fouled out with 2:36 to play in the second half. Daly also posted five rebounds as the Captains improved to 5-1 all-time vs. York.
Christopher Newport remains tied for second place in the CAC standings with Marymount at 9-3, behind conference-leading St. Mary's at 10-2.
CNU returns to action on Wednesday at the Freeman Center vs. Salisbury. Tipoff time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
