Captains Travel to York (Pa.) for Doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 & 3:00 pm

Game Notes:  CNU Men's Basketball

YORK, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport men's and women's basketball teams are back on the road Saturday, taking on the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans in a doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 pm. Live stats and video will be provided for both games, and the men's game will be featured live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network at Xtra 99.1 FM.

CNU swept the first doubleheader against the Spartans on January 3, as the women came away with a 62-51 win on the home floor while the men captured a 95-61 victory. Just four weeks later, the afternoon games in Pennsylvania feature a CNU team battling for seeding in the top half of the conference standings, and a York College program fighting for a spot in the postseason tournament.

First, the CNU women (12-6, 8-3) will face a re-match of the 2014 CAC Championship Game against the Spartans (8-10, 4-7) at 1:00 pm. The Captains are coming off a pair of wins against Frostburg State and Southern Virginia and are currently tied for third in the CAC standings.

CNU continues to be led by senior forward Camry Green, averaging a double-double on the season with a team-high 13.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Green is closing in on the top 20 scorers of all-time at CNU, trailing Linda Richardson by eight points for 20th on the list. She is also shooting over 55% from the field, ranking in the top 25 in Division III.

As a team, the Captains continue to lead the CAC in scoring, averaging over 71 points per game. The depth of the team has been key for CNU all season long, as three of the top five leading scorers come off the bench. Rookies Sam Porter, Bailey Dufrene and Devon Byrd are nearly 24 points per game combined while also grabbing almost 15 rebounds per game as well.

On the other end of the court, the Spartans have bounced back from an early season lull and are playing well coming into Saturday's game. After losing eight of nine games in the middle of the year, York has surged back with wins in four of the last five games. The Spartans defeated Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, 72-55, and are averaging 71.2 points over the last five games. The Spartans, averaging a league-low 17.5 turnovers per game, will be facing a CNU defense that forces over 23 per game.

Shea Wassel, who missed the season's first matchup due to an injury, is back on the floor for York and leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 12.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Sam Hruz, the league's leader in blocked shots, ranks second on the team in both categories with 9.9 and 6.4, respectively.

On the men's side, the Christopher Newport men (13-5, 8-3) are looking to bounce back after a tough loss on the road to Southern Virginia Wednesday, falling to the Knights in overtime, 60-59. CNU remains locked in a tie for second place in the conference standings, trailing St. Mary's (Md.) by just one game. The Spartans (4-14, 3-8) also are coming off a loss to Penn State Harrisburg, falling two games back of the final playoff spot.

CNU freshman Marcus Carter leads the team in scoring, with 14.4 points per game, while sophomore Tim Daly, with 13.8, and senior Mike Cherry, with 11.6, are also in double figures for the Captains. CNU leads the conference in scoring, averaging 72.4 points per game, coming into Saturday's contest.

The Spartans have struggled since the calendar turned to 2015, falling in seven of the last eight games. Dalton Myers leads the team and ranks in the league's top five with 13.8 points per game. He's started all 18 games and is averaging a team high 31.9 minutes per game.

Tip is set for 1:00 pm in Charles Wolf Gymnasium. Live stats and video links will be available at CNUsports.com.
