Camry Green highlighted an otherwise balanced team performance for Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon, as the Captains (11-6, 7-3) raced past Frostburg State (1-14, 0-10), 77-52. CNU swept the regular season series behind Green's 11th double-double of the season, as the senior leader blew past 900 rebounds for her career in the contest.
Green came into the game needing just three boards to become the sixth player in program history to reach 900 rebounds and quickly picked up the accolade less than ten minutes into the game. By no means finished, the senior finished out the contest with a game-high 14 rebounds to go with a 17-point performance, collecting her 40th career double-double.
Despite a 13-game losing streak, the Bobcats came out firing against the Captains and managed to hold a lead for over eight minutes in the first half. The CNU defense managed to hold Frostburg State to just 29% shooting in the first half, but turnovers plagued the Captains offense and allowed the road team to hang in until a big run to end the half.
A three-point play by Jasmine Walker gave Frostburg State a 19-18 lead with 8:47 remaining, but the Captains responded with the next 11 points to take a ten-point lead, 29-19. Rookie
Devon Byrd had two buckets in the run, while freshman point guard
Makenzie Fancher set up a pair to help ignite the CNU offense. The Captains closed the half on a 16-6 run to take a nine-point edge at the break, 34-25.
Green was already near her double-double by halftime, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Byrd and fellow freshman
Bailey Dufrene combined to go 5-for-5 off the bench with six points apiece. The team offense was clicking, with 11 assists on 13 made field goals, as CNU hit at a 52% clip in the opening stanza. Sophomore
Lauren Cox had three assists while Fancher and Dufrene each had a pair.
Cox opened the second half with a three as CNU never looked back. The home team would grow the lead to as many as 26, at 73-47 with 4:58 remaining, and the game closed with a 25-point win for the Captains, 77-52.
Cox had a strong performance in 22 minutes, dishing out a game-high five assists to go with six points and four rebounds. Three CNU played finished in double figures, while
Sam Porter added a near-double-double off the bench with nine points and nine rebounds. Green's 17 points were joined by 15 from Byrd and 10 from
Jordan Miller as the scoring leaders for CNU.
The Captains shot 46.4% from the field (26-56) and held Frostburg State to just 30.4% (17-56). Ronje James led all scorers with 19 points, and Jasmine Walker also finished with 10 points.
CNU will now hit the road for back-to-back conference games, heading to Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, January 28 at 5:30 pm, followed by a trip to York College (Pa.) on January 31.
