The Captains improved to 13-4 overall with an 8-2 record in league play after putting up 57 points and outscoring the Bobcats by 23 points in the second half.
Frostburg State falls to 8-9 overall, and 4-6 in conference action, as the Captains led wire-to-wire in the Freeman Center Saturday afternoon. Three different players finished in double figures for CNU, led by a career-high-tying 22 from rookie
Aaron McFarland, but 13 different Captains scored in a balanced and impressive team offensive performance. As a team, the Captains dished out 22 assists on 31 made field goals, and six players registered multiple dimes.
The first half was anything but a run-away for the Captains, however, as Frostburg State battled despite being unable to take the lead. Three times the Bobcats tied things up in the opening stanza, and the road team managed to stay within one possession for over 12 minutes before a late surge led CNU to an 11-point halftime lead.
Frostburg State's leading scorer, Nick Smoot, drilled a jumper from the free-throw line with 8:08 remaining to pull the Bobcats within one, 17-16. The lead was just 24-19 with four and a half minutes remaining, but McFarland took over and closed out the half on fire, scoring 11 straight points for CNU to give the Captains a 35-24 edge at the break.
Marcus Carter found McFarland for a layup, he hit two three's, was fouled on a third and connected on all three free-throws.
The burst by the freshman making his second start helped CNU carry momentum over into the second half, where they would blow past the Bobcats, 57-34 in the frame. McFarland would score another 11 points to finish with a game-high 22 on 6-of-12 shooting, including five made three-pointers.
All five starters for the Captains finished with at least nine points, as McFarland was joined by ten points apiece from Carter and
Kevin Regimbal, while
Mike Cherry and
Tim Daly added nine. Daly was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds to go with his nine points, and also chipped in three assists out of the front-court.
The stellar team performance included a game-high four assists from reserve point guard
Rayshard Brown, who also added eight points, a block and a steal. In all, the Captains registered eight blocked shots, including two from freshman
Spencer Marin.
On the other side of the floor, Jerel Carter had 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Bobcats, while Shawn Henson added 11 points off the bench.
CNU outrebounded Frostburg State, 43-31, and shot 46.3% (31-67) from the floor while holding the Bobcats to 35.8% (19-53).
