LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The potent Christopher Newport offense was on display again Wednesday night, as the 12th-ranked Captains improved to 7-1-1 this season after a five-goal onslaught on the road versus Lynchburg College (4-4-0). CNU won, 5-1, with four different players chipping in scoring strikes in the win for the Captains.

Coming into Wednesday's contest with the 28th-ranked scoring offense in the nation, the Captains made a push to move up the board with a season-high in goals scored. Both teams were held scoreless for the first 35 minutes, but the floodgates opened in the last 10, as CNU scored three goals in a span of just over six minutes.

The Lynchburg defense did a solid job holding back the Captains in the first stretch of the contest, facing seven CNU shots in the first 35 minutes and not allowing a goal. Rookie Hunter Johnson had a terrific attempt turned away by the post when he headed a shot toward the goal and Hornet keeper Sam Cannon made four early saves. The Captains offense would not be denied, however, as senior leading scorer Jalon Brown broke through in the 35th minute of action. His goal was assisted by Patrick Burns, who would kick off a stellar individual run with the helper.

After Burns hit Brown in stride with a cross to set up the first goal, he also picked up an assist on CNU's next goal, scored by rookie Henry Gotay in the 40th minute. Burns ripped a shot that was deflected to the feet of Gotay, who put away his first career goal for the eventual gamewinner, putting CNU up, 2-0. Finally, Burns capped the strong ending to the first half with a goal of his own just a minute and a half later, an unassisted strike in the 41st minute.

As the teams went into halftime, CNU held a 12-3 advantage in overall shots, including an 8-2 edge in shots on-goal.

The Captains would hold onto a 3-0 edge in the game until the 72nd minute when Lynchburg picked up a penalty kick goal off the foot of David Yates. For the seventh time this season, though, the Captains offense would add multiple goals in the second half to cruise to a big win on the road.

The scoring would wait until the final ten minutes again, as junior forward Ryan Balfour connected on a loose ball shot in the 85th minute for his third goal of the season, and Gotay would add a second goal in the 88th minute off an assist by rookie Zach Douglass. It was Douglass' first career point in just his third career appearance.

As a team, the Captains defense continued to impress despite the penalty kick goal allowed. The Hornets managed just three shots on-goal, including the PK, and only ten shots total. CNU outshot the home team, 16-10, with a decided 11-3 edge in shots on-frame. Cannon made five saves in net for Lynchburg, while the team added one defensive save. Nolan Mann, in net for the Captains, needed to make just two saves to secure his fourth win of the season.

CNU will return home on Saturday, September 27 as they host York College (Pa.) at 3:00 pm in the Capital Athletic Conference season opener.
