CNU Travels to St. Mary's (Md.) in CAC Baseball Action Wednesday

CORRECTION: Today's game was originally scheduled as a home game, but will instead be played in St. Mary's City, Md. The two teams agreed to switch home games earlier in the year due to inclement weather.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Wrapping up their second to last conference series of the year, the Christopher Newport University baseball team will travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland (16-15, 7-6) on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm. The Captains (17-12, 9-4) will take on a Seahawks squad that defeated CNU earlier this season, 4-3, and has won four of their last five games.

CNU is on a bit of a roll themselves, winners in six of their last eight games. The offense is one of the most explosive in the nation, blasting 28 home runs in 29 games, while hitting 106 extra-base hits in total. As a team, the Captains are hitting .307, led by senior shortstop Billy Steel (.417) and junior outfielder Tommy Vitaletti (.414). Steel has hit a league-high nine home runs, and leads the team in runs scored (33) and driven in (34). Vitaletti has a team-high 12 doubles and is a constant threat to put the bat on the ball, striking out just five times this season.

On the hill, a trio of senior arms have led the way, as Bryan Bierlein (4-3, 1.19 ERA) and Nick Santalucia (6-0, 1.00) are each posting historically great seasons, while Jacob Vaughan (2-1, 3.26) is having a career-year in his swan song season. Bierlein leads the team with four complete games and has also finished off three games with saves; in 11 appearances this year, he leads the team with 48 strikeouts in 60.2 innings pitched. Santalucia boasts a 14-0 career record and the crafty lefty has allowed just five earned runs in 45 innings pitched this season.

Defensively, the Captains continue to post a strong season, turning 26 double plays and fielding at a .963 clip. Collin Wilber has been stellar behind the plate, cutting down 12 would-be base stealers, and Bierlein has added a team-best four pick-offs this season.

St. Mary's (Md.) comes into Wednesday's game led by Alex Lenovitz, hitting .320 with 17 runs scored and 15 RBI for the Seahawks. Jared Eaker (.316) and Brandon Eady (.305) are the only other Seahawks with 20 or more starts hitting over .300 this season. The pitching staff has been led by reigning CAC Pitcher of the Week Sam Beatty, who has three complete games and one save, boasting a 6-2 record and 1.82 ERA. Beatty was the winning pitcher in game one against the Captains, tossing five innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
