#3 Captains Take on #2 Salisbury in CAC Tournament Friday

YORK, Pa. -- After a first-round victory over Frostburg State, the third-seeded Christopher Newport baseball team will now take the show on the road as the remainder of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament will be played on the home site of the top-seeded York College of Pennsylvania Spartans. CNU (21-13) will take on second-seeded, and nationally-ranked, Salisbury University (24-7) at 4:00 pm at Jaquet Field on York's campus, in the third game of the day.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available, with links found at the tournament homepage or at CNUsports.com. To view rosters, schedules, stats and more from this weekend's tournament, click here

The 16th-ranked Sea Gulls reached Friday's matchup with CNU with a come-from-behind win over fifth-seeded Wesley College, pulling out a 5-4 victory against the Wolverines. Salisbury trailed, 4-0, in the game, but scored five unanswered runs and leaned on league-leading closer Kyle Hamby for his seventh save of the season. CNU captured a 2-1 victory against the Bobcats, behind a dominant pitching effort from senior Nick Santalucia. The lefty struck out a career-high 11 batters in an eight-inning start, allowing just one run.

Salisbury and CNU split their regular season series, and both teams won a game by the final score of 4-3. CNU won behind another eight-inning effort by Santalucia, striking out four and allowing just two earned runs.

This season, the Captains senior class has been pivotal in their success, powered by the arms of Santalucia and fellow starters Bryan Bierlein and Jacob Vaughan, and the hard-hitting bats of Billy Steel, Curtis Pittman and Justin Weaver. Steel and the rest of the CNU lineup have blasted the Captains to the nation's leading home-run hitting ball club, smacking 37 out of the park this year. Steel has a league-leading ten pops, ranking second nationally as an individual. Pittman and Weaver have each added four long balls, while junior Tommy Vitaletti also has four.

On the hill, Santalucia is 7-0 with a league-leading 0.95 ERA, while Bierlein has gone the distance a league-best five times and boasts a 5-3 mark with a 1.15 ERA and four saves. Vaughan, at 3-1 with a 3.29 ERA, has provided a solid third option for CNU, and four different players have combined for the remaining eight starts in CNU's rotation.

Salisbury hits .348 as a team, and is led by Kyle Hayman, who ranks 22nd nationally in total hits with 52. The junior outfielder is hitting .406 in 30 games this season, with 24 RBI and 39 runs scored. Pete Grasso is hitting .392 with a team-high 40 RBI and Bobby Sanzone leads the team in RBI, despite only playing in 20 games. The Sea Gulls are a speedy team, with 60 stolen bases this season, but have only hit five home runs.

The Sea Gulls pitching staff is anchored by Friday's probable starter, Brett Collacchi. The six-foot junior right-hander is 7-1 in 2014 with a 2.86 ERA, anchoring a staff that boasts a 3.03 team ERA. The bullpen is very strong, led by Hamby, who is 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA and the league-high seven saves.

CNU and Salisbury will take the field at approximately 4:00 pm. The game could begin earlier if the two previous games are concluded. The double-elimination tournament will continue on Saturday, April 19.
