CAC Baseball Tournament Opening Round Postponed to Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Due to the expectation of inclement weather in the region, all three Capital Athletic Conference Tournament opening round baseball games have been postponed from the originally scheduled Tuesday start by one day, now slated to play on Wednesday, April 16. The third-seeded Christopher Newport Captains (20-13) will host fourth-seeded Frostburg State University (23-8) at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, at Captains Park.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com. For more information on the 2014 CAC Baseball Championship Tournament, updates will be available at cacsports.com.

The Captains earned the number three seed after a three-way tie for second place in the league was settled via head-to-head tiebreakers. Salisbury earned the number two seed, and Frostburg took the number four. The York College of Pennsylvania Spartans captured the 2014 regular season title and top seed in the week's championship, and will host the double-elimination tournament starting with the second round on Friday, April 18.

CNU has been led by senior shortstop Billy Steel, hitting a team-high .421 while leading the league in several offensive categories. Steel tops the conference in hits (56), runs scored (42), runs batted in (37), home runs (10) and slugging percentage (.759). He has been bolstered by strong seasons by junior Tommy Vitaletti and seniors Justin Weaver and Curtis Pittman. Pittman took over the starting job at first base and has raked in his 18 starts this season, hitting .389 with four home runs and five doubles. Vitaletti and Weaver have also been run-scoring machines, hitting .385 and .352 respectively, while combining for 50 runs scored and 43 RBI.

On the mound, CNU features a strong contingent of senior arms, led by Bryan Bierlein and Nick Santalucia. Bierlein has tossed a league-high five complete games and, in 69.2 inning pitched, boasts a 1.16 ERA and 54 strikeouts. Santalucia is 6-0 this season with the best starting pitchers ERA in the league, at 0.92. He has struck out 41 batters in 49.0 innings pitched.

Frostburg State comes into Wednesday's game winners of four straight, including a doubleheader sweep of Wesley that earned the Bobcats a share of second place in the regular season standings. FSU is led by a potent offense that is hitting .341 as a team, featuring league-leading hitter Ricky Castro at .461. Zach Weiss is also over .400 with a .401 clip, while scoring a team-high 34 runs. Ricky Brady rounds out a strong offensive group with a team-high 32 RBI while hitting .389 for the Bobcats.

CNU and Frostburg split their regular season matchups, as Kenny Georgius led the way on the mound. Georgius has a sterling 5-0 record with a 1.59 ERA this season, striking out 37 batters in 51.0 innings pitched.
