BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Playing in a Thursday afternoon non-conference matchup, the Christopher Newport University baseball team suffered a 5-1 setback to the Bridgewater College Eagles (14-7). The Captains fall to 11-10 on the season after the first of five games in the next five days.
Junior
Jordan Boze started for CNU, as the Captains sent six different pitchers to the hill and gave up just two earned runs. Boze and rookie
Michael Thomas combined to give up just one run on three hits over the first five innings of work, with the junior starter tossing the first three.
In the bottom of the second, the Eagles threatened after an RBI triple from Darren Yoder scored the game's first run and put another Bridgewater player in scoring position with less than one out. Boze managed the damage, however, by getting the next two batters out on a foul out to first base and a fly out to left field.
CNU evened the score at one run by breaking through in the top of the fifth. Freshman
A.J. Nicely beat out an infield single with one out and later advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. With the extra out, junior
Tommy Vitaletti made the Eagles pay by drilling a hard shot up the middle to score Nicely with the game-tying run.
The Captains could not add to the score, however, and Bridgewater tacked on runs in the sixth, seventh and two more in the bottom of the eight for the final score of 5-1. Zach Hynes had an RBI single off of junior
Brett Mays and Ryan Fitzgerald had an RBI infield single later in the game off of
Justin Garber.
Christopher Newport had six hits in the game, but stranded eight runners.
Kyle Corwin led CNU with a 2-for-4 day, while Nicely was 1-for-3.
The Captains will need to shake off the loss quickly, as they return to action on Friday, March 28 at 3:00 pm, hosting Mary Washington in CAC action.
