DOVER, Del. -- Aaron Chrzaszcz scored four times, while freshmen
Brooks Billings and
Randy Foster each tallied hat-tricks as the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team used a stellar offensive performance to storm past Wesley, 16-8, for the program's first-ever Capital Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Scott Miller Stadium.
Chrzaszcz finished the day with a game-high five points, while
Adam Abbate and
Gregory Limon also contributed three helpers for CNU. The defense also continued to do its job as Abbate and
Michael Mabry both forced a pair of turnovers and
Matt Hayden chipped in with eight saves to earn the victory.
With the win, Christopher Newport extends its program-record winning streak to six games and improves to 6-1 overall. The setback drops Wesley to 4-2.
With an opportunity to make a statement in their first CAC contest, the Captains wasted little time jumping on the hosts. Although Wesley struck first, CNU answered with a breathtaking run. Chrzaszcz scored three straight goals, including a pair set-up by Limon, to secure a 3-1 lead. Later, with only a minute remaining in the first quarter,
Joey Rolando dished to
Billy Crist, who unleashed a dart to add the perfect punctuation mark on the fast start.
Leading 4-1 entering the second, Christopher Newport hit a bit of a rough patch at the start of the new stanza. The Wolverines scored twice during the first six minutes to cut their lead back down to one. With Wesley showing some life, CNU bombarded the WC defense to grab control of the game.
Foster jumpstarted the rally with his first two goals of the contest with four minutes remaining in the second quarter. Still looking for more, the Captains kept control of the ball as Kirschke dominated on faceoffs, winning six of the seven battles during the period. Eventually, Chrzaszcz wrapped up his spectacular first half with his fourth goal before
Dave Magdeburger struck for his first to give the visitors an 8-3 lead entering the half.
Following the break, nothing changed. The Captains continued to find success on the attack as Billings pushed the advantage to six just four minutes into the third. Later, following a vicious defensive stand, which featured caused turnovers by Abbate, Limon,
Teddy Pekalski,
Steven West, and
Brenden Dwyer, the CNU attack tacked on its sixth straight goal. This time, after Limon scooped up a loose ball,
Parker Thompson found some daylight and fired a rocket through the defense to secure a 10-3 edge.
Although Wesley finally broke the string with five minutes remaining in the third, Christopher Newport brushed it off and went right back to work. Hayden made two saves during the waning moments of the period, while Foster, Thompson, and Billings uncorked three consecutive goals to nab a 13-4 lead entering the final stanza.
With the game well in hand, Billings kicked off the fourth with his third goal to nail down a double-digit advantage. Despite a bit of a run by the Wolverines, the Captains never lost control.
Ryan Mills dropped in his first goal before Limon added one off an assist by
Hunter King.
Mark Hargrove, who entered in relief during the final 10 minutes, also posted a pair of saves between the pipes to help seal the eight-goal victory.
Overall, CNU held a slim 35-34 edge in shots and won 14 of the game's 26 faceoffs.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad hosts Methodist in a non-conference showdown at 5:30 p.m.
