Captains Host Wesley College in CAC Doubleheader Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport baseball will host Wesley College (5-6, 2-1) in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, with first pitch set for Noon. The Captains (8-8, 2-1) pulled out a 3-1 victory versus Southern Virginia University on Thursday, and will take on a Wolverines squad that also picked up a win against CAC opponent this week with a 3-2 win over Marymount.

Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.

The Wolverines have lost three of their last four games overall, but are tied with the Captains in the league standings. Two of their in-conference games have been one-run contests. Wesley has played eight straight games at home and the trip to Newport News will be their first game away from the home field since Feb. 23.

The Wolverines feature a balanced offense, with five starters driving in six runs and a sixth driving in seven. Leading the way is Trevor Mears, hitting .450 while starting all 11 games for Wesley. He has scored a team-high 10 runs and swatted four doubles this season. On the mound, Zach Stuart (3-1) has been the leader with a 2.08 ERA in four starts.

Pitching has been key for the Captains, as CNU has held opponents to three runs or less in four of the last five weekend starts. Seniors Bryan Bierlein (1-2) and Jacob Vaughan (2-0) have been important catalysts, boasting a 1.52 and 2.96 ERA, respectively. Bierlein is coming off a complete game loss against Gallaudet, in which he faced just 30 batters, and Vaughan picked up his second win of the year when he threw his first complete game against Marymount.

Offensively, CNU has gotten steady production from senior shortstop Billy Steel, with a .435 batting average and a team-best 10 extra-base hits. He's knocked out four home runs and leads the team in RBI (17) and runs scored (14). Fellow senior Justin Weaver and sophomore Kyle Corwin have each driven in double figure runs, with 13 and 12, respectively.
