WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The dance continues for the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport University women's basketball team, as the Captains (24-5) travel to Washington state to take on seventh-ranked Whitman College (28-1) in the Division III Women's Basketball Championship sectional round. CNU will take on the host Missionaries at 7:00 pm locally, 10:00 pm eastern in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, with links to live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com.
Led by head coach
Bill Broderick, the Captains have enjoyed tremendous success over the last two seasons, posting a 53-8 record in his tenure. Last season, CNU danced on to the Elite Eight before falling to the eventual national champions from DePauw University on their home court. This year, the Captains make their 16th NCAA Tournament appearance all-time, running their overall record to 17-16 in the postseason tournament. Over the last four trips to the NCAA Tournament, CNU is 12-4.
On the other side of the floor, Whitman also advanced to the Elite Eight in 2013 after enjoying, to date, the finest season in school history. It was their first trip to the NCAA Tournament and set school the school record for wins in a season. This year, head coach Michelle Ferenz has done one better, running off a record 27 straight wins before suffering their first loss of the season in the conference championship game. The Missionaries picked up the school's first ever number one national ranking and boast a 28-1 mark headed into Friday's tilt with the Captains.
A Sample of Whitman
The Missionaries are led by a trio of players in double figures, while featuring a balanced offense that shares the ball incredibly well. Whitman's junior point guard Heather Johns was named the Northwest Conference Player of the Year after leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. Senior post Sarah Anderegg was also a first team All-Conference selection, while classmate Meghan White was a second team pick. Johns is pouring in 18.9 points per game, while Anderegg adds 16.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest.
Ferenz was named the NWC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row after becoming the winningest coach in school history, wrapping up her 13th year at the helm for the Missionaries.
Stellar Seniors
The senior class for the Captains will be appearing in their third NCAA Sectional, with wins in the previous two trips to the NCAA Tournament. As freshmen, the Captains advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history and as juniors the team played through to the Elite Eight. In their careers, the senior class has posted a 105-18 overall mark for a winning percentage of .854
