CNU Men’s Lacrosse Looks to Extend Four-Game Winning Streak on Wednesday at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --
Riding a four-game winning streak, the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will look to continue its winning ways on Wednesday when the Captains head to Virginia Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. battle.

After opening the year with a five-game homestand, CNU hits the road with a 4-1 record. Virginia Wesleyan has also gotten off to a strong start this year, rolling to a 3-0 mark, including back-to-back home victories against Berry and Elizabethtown last week.

The Captains and Marlins have a long history dating back to the first year of the CNU program. Overall, the squads have met seven times with Virginia Wesleyan holding a 6-1 lead in the all-time series. VWC won last year's bout, 11-8, in Virginia Beach.

Last Thursday, the Captains continued their roll with a thrilling 8-7 overtime victory against Eastern, who entered the match-up receiving votes in the USILA National Poll. Aaron Chrzaszcz led the way with three goals, including the clincher in overtime. Joey Rolando also had the finest effort of his career, chipping in with three scores and two assists.

Overall this year, Chrzaszcz leads the team with 12 goals, while Brooks Billings ranks second with eight scores. Billy Crist has been the squad's top facilitator with six assists, while Adam Abbate and Gregory Limon have four helpers apiece.

Between the pipes, freshman Matt Hayden has compiled a 9.07 goals-against-average and a .549 save percentage. He has also received outstanding contributions from his defense, including Brenden Dwyer and Steven West. Dwyer has caused 13 turnovers this year, while West has forced 11 and picked up seven ground balls. Freshman Nick Kirschke has also had a solid season so far, winning 59 percent of his faceoff attempts.

Virginia Wesleyan has been led this year by Josh Currier and Nick Pappas. During their last outing, Currier posted six goals against Elizabethtown, while Pappas had nine points, including five assists. Overall this season, Currier has a team-high 13 goals, and Pappas leads the way with 19 points and eight assists.

The Marlins have also done solid work on the defensive end, headlined by junior goalie Rory Finnegan. Currently, the third-year standout has an 8.92 goals-against-average and a .671 save percentage. Ben Fletcher has also forced five turnovers for VWC, while Jason Tutchon has captured 21 of his 27 faceoff attempts.
