CNU Hosts Southern Virginia in Doubleheader Tonight

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After winter weather forced a pair of postponements, the Christopher Newport University men's and women's basketball teams will play host to Southern Virginia University tonight, February 3 at 4:30 and 6:30 pm.

The Captains and Knights will face off as non-conference opponents despite both being members of the Capital Athletic Conference, due to Southern Virginia serving in its final year as a probationary NCAA Division III member. The game will not count in the CAC standings.

The women's teams will take the court at 4:30 pm, as CNU looks to improve on its 11-game winning streak. The Captains have won 24 straight home games, ranking as the fifth best active streak in NCAA Division III and tied for the eighth-longest across all three divisions. CNU is now 16-2 overall this season, with a 9-1 mark in league play.

Senior Tia Perry was named the CAC Player of the Week earlier today, giving the Captains their third straight league honor. Ranked as high as 15th in the nation, CNU is coming off a huge win over eighth-ranked York (Pa.), 67-64 in overtime. Perry and fellow senior Nicole Mitchell are leading the way, each averaging just over 17 points per game.

Southern Virginia has been led by freshman guard Tatiana Monsen, averaging 10.5 points per, 2.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Crystal Cleveland adds a tough look inside, averaging 9.7 rebounds and 8.5 points per game. The Knights are just 3-15 overall this season, and will look to avenge a 92-58 loss to the Captains earlier this season.

On the men's side, CNU has won three of the last four games, improving to 13-5 overall with a 6-4 mark in league play. Senior Tra Benefield is the second-leading scorer in the conference, averaging 18.2 points per game while also grabbing a team-best 7.2 rebounds per contest. The Captains are scoring 72.6 points per game this season and are out-rebounding opponents by a +6 margin.

The Knights are 4-11 this season and are riding a three-game losing streak heading into Monday night's contest, set to tip at 6:30 pm. Junior Preston Eaton is leading the squad with 16.8 points per game and scored 22 against CNU earlier this season. The Captains pulled away with a 80-54 victory in Buena Vista, though, led by a double-double from Benefield. SVU junior Wesley Evans chips in 10.6 points per game and junior Chris Baker is also averaging double figures with 11.6 points per game.
