FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will look to keep their win streak going against a talented Hampden-Sydney College squad Thursday, as they travel to face the Tigers at 3:00 pm. The two teams matched up for the Captains season opener earlier this year, and CNU escaped with a 3-2 extra-inning victory.
The Tigers are receiving votes in the current D3baseball.com national rankings, and have opened the season 8-2, outscoring opponents 81-37. Since the loss to CNU, Hampden-Sydney has run off six straight wins and is averaging 10.7 runs per game.
The Captains offense has also turned it up a notch, however, scoring 34 runs in their last five games. Seniors
Justin Weaver and
Billy Steel have been red hot for the Captains, driving in a combined 22 runs through the first eight games. Steel is hitting .516 with five extra-base hits, scoring a team-best ten times, and Weaver has got his average up to .379 with a pair of home runs.
On the hill, the senior class has led the way with
Bryan Bierlein,
Jacob Vaughan and
Nick Santalucia combining to go 3-1 in six starts so far. All three have sub-2.50 ERA's and have combined for 27 strikeouts.
Hampden-Sydney is hitting .313 as a team, with six starters over .300 and seven hitting .290 or better. Junior Spencer Wiles is leading the pack, hitting .448 with six extra-base hits and a team-high 11 runs scored.
