SALISBURY, MD.- The Christopher Newport men's basketball team plays a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament game for the first time ever Tuesday night. The Captains, seeded fifth, travel to Salisbury, Maryland, to take on the fourth-seeded Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. Game time is set for 8:30 p.m. at the Maggs Center. The game will be broadcast live with audio and video available at www.CNUsports.com/live.
"It's truly a new season," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "The records all go out the window and everything that happened this year is now in the past. We have to win three games for a conference championship, that's the goal."
The Captains won three of their final four games to finish the regular season with a record of 17-8, and 9-7 in the CAC. Christopher Newport defeated Marymount in Arlington on Saturday, 59-56, in the regular season finale.
Senior
Tra Benefield leads the CNU attack, averaging 18.1 points per game. The pre-season All-American has moved into fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list, 74 points behind current assistant coach
Conley Taylor for fourth place.
Salisbury has won three straight and eight of its last nine games. The Sea Gulls were 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the CAC this season.
The Gulls are led by senior guard Tim Harwood, who averages 14.3 points per game.
The teams split their two games this season, with each team winning at home. The Captains downed the Gulls, 56,47, at the Freeman Center on December 18th. Salisbury beat CNU, 83-58, at the Maggs Center on February 5th.
Tonight's meeting is the 31st all-time, with the Captains holding a 19-11 lead in the series.
The winner will advance to the semifinal round to play top-seeded Wesley Thursday night in Dover, DE.
