FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Playing in wet conditions at the Methodist Diamond Invitational, the Christopher Newport University baseball suffered a 10-3 setback to Lynchburg College (3-0) on Saturday afternoon. The Captains got multi-hit games from five different players, pumping out 14 hits, but could not overcome a late offensive surge by the Hornets.
Senior
Bryan Bierlein (0-1) battled through five tough innings in the rainy game, striking out five batters while walking just one. He gave up four runs, just two earned, while allowing eight hits.Â
The Hornets jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two when Wil Parsons started things off with a single, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. An RBI single by Joe Rogers was followed by a sacrifice fly by Joseph Knight to plate the first two runs. Lynchburg would get two more RBI knocks in the inning to take an early lead.
CNU got on the board in the top half of the third when senior
Billy Steel poked a two-out single into right field and scored on an RBI triple by classmate
Justin Weaver.
The Captains cut the lead to a pair in the top of the seventh, manufacturing a run through the middle of the lineup. Weaver singled through the left side and moved up to second when
Austin Kilbourne singled into left. A sacrifice bunt by
Bryant Lowry put both players in scoring position, but CNU could only plate one on a
Kyle Corwin sacrifice fly before the rally was ended.Â
With the lead 4-2 with two and a half innings to go, Lynchburg jumped on the Captains bullpen, scoring six runs in their last two trips to the plate. Corwin drove in his second run of the game with a two-out single in the top of the ninth, but that would be all the offense for CNU, dropping their second straight game.Â
Junior Martin Henderlite (2-0) started for the Hornets, picking up his second win to start the year after earning All-American laurels as a sophomore last season. He tossed five innings, striking out seven and giving up just one run on six hits. Brandon Miller earned his second save, throwing four innings in relief with three strikeouts.
CNU will return to the field on Sunday, taking on host and former USA South rival Methodist University at 1:00 pm. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com.Â
