NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Saturday is an important day for the Christopher Newport University men's and women's basketball teams. Both squads host Penn State Harrisburg in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Freeman Center, and both results could secure CNU's spots in the upcoming conference post-season tournament.
The women's game will start at 2 p.m. followed by the men's game at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live at
www.CNUsports.com/live, with the men's action also on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM).
Saturday is Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Day at CNU, and four new members of the Hall of Fame will be inducted at halftime of the men's game.
The CNU women's team is coming off a tough loss to Mary Washington at the Freeman Center Wednesday night. The defeat snapped a 14-game winning streak for the Captains, who were ranked 12th in the nation this week. If
Bill Broderick's squad can bounce back and defeat the Lions for the second time this year, the Captains will clinch at least the 2nd seed in the tournament, which means a bye in the quarterfinals and a home game in the semifinal round.
Christopher Newport is now 19-3 overall and 11-2 in the Capital. Penn State Harrisburg is 6-16 overall and 1-12 in conference play. The Captains dominated the Lions, 87-26, on January 11th in Middletown, PA.
The CNU men are coming off an impressive 74-61 triumph over Mary Washington Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains were propelled by 25 points from senior
Tra Benefield, who was playing in his 100th game as a Captain.
The Captains are now 15-7 overall and 7-6 in CAC play. Penn State Harrisburg comes into the Freeman Center with a mark of 8-14 overall and 5-8 in conference action. CNU will be looking to avenge an overtime loss to the Lions on January 11th, 63-60, in the first meeting ever of the two schools.
A victory by the CNU men Saturday would clinch a spot in the six-team post-season tournament, which begins on February 25th at home sites of the higher seeds. The Captains are currently in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings.
