FROSTBURG, Md. -- Sophomore Tim Daly notched his fourth 20-point effort of the season, and rookie Marcus Carter scored a season-high 26 points as both players posted double-doubles to lead the Christopher Newport Captains (5-1, 2-0) to an 85-67 win on the road at Frostburg State (4-3, 1-1).

Carter scored a game-high 26 on 10-of-14 from the field, while adding 12 rebounds in what was the best game of his young career. He added an assist, block and steal, while knocking down one trey in 32 minutes of action. In the front-court, Daly dominated inside, grabbing a season-high 14 rebounds and showcasing a host of post moves for easy baskets. The sophomore knocked down 8-of-15 attempts, while shooting 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

CNU built a big lead at halftime, using a pair of scoring spurts to extend the lead against a solid opponent in league play on the road. In the first 5:11 of game time, the Captains raced out to a 13-3 edge, forcing a Frostburg State timeout. After enduring a mini-Bobcats run, as the home team cut back to within four points, at 17-13, the Captains answered with yet another burst. This time, a 15-3 run over the next four minutes would all but put away the Bobcats in the first half. CNU led, 32-16, on a dunk by Hunter Wetherell with 6:22 remaining in the first half.

The Captains held on to a 14-point edge at halftime, leading 41-27 after Carter dropped a fast-break layup with less than a second remaining on the clock. Junior Connor Laframboise set up the basket, stealing the ball inside the arc and rushing out on the break with Carter.

At halftime, CNU was shooting 47.1% from the field on 16-of-34 attempts, while the defense held Frostburg State to just 32.4% shooting on 11-of-34 shooting. Carter and Daly already had 11 points apiece, scoring more than half of CNU's points in the first half. Torrell Goodman led the way for the Bobcats, scoring nine points, while Nick Smoot had eight.

Another run to start the second half sparked the biggest lead of the game for CNU. Jerel Carter hit the first shot of the half, and added a free-throw a minute later, but that would prove to be the only FSU points in the first five minutes of the second stanza. Meanwhile, CNU tacked on 14 points in the same stretch to take a 55-30 advantage. The lead would expand to 58-33 as the surge to start the second half would finish out with a Marcus Carter layup with 13:34 remaining, 61-33.

The Bobcats made a run to get back within 14 points with 6:10 remaining, threatening to make it a game with plenty of time remaining. Nick Smoot led the charge and finished with a team-high 21 points while Carter finished with 10 points.

CNU answered the run, though, and held off the Bobcats in the final stretch. Daly and Carter controlled the second half run, while the team defense held off any potential comeback. The Captains had seven steals and five blocked shots, including three from Laframboise. Five different players combined to hit seven three-pointers, and the offense as whole continued to play well, hitting 47.8% of shots in the game.

The Captains will be off this week for final exams, but return to action at home next Sunday, December 14 against nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan. Tip is set for 2:00 pm at the Freeman Center.
