CNU Basketball Travels to Frostburg State for CAC Doubleheader Saturday

Women's Game Notes

FROSTBURG, Md. -- After both teams picked up league victories to start the Capital Athletic Conference season on Wednesday night, the Christopher Newport men's and women's basketball teams are headed on the road seeking win number two against Frostburg State University. The Captains will play a conference doubleheader on Saturday, December 6 against the Bobcats, with tip times set for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

First, the CNU women, off to a 5-2 start overall with a 1-0 record in conference play, will take on Frostburg State (1-4, 0-1) at 1:00 pm. Then, the CNU men, 4-1 overall and 1-0 against the league, will face a stiff test against the Bobcats (4-2, 1-0) in an early season matchup of teams who each defeated nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon this year. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available of both games, with links found on the schedule at CNUsports.com.

After dropping two of their first three games, the CNU women have rolled onto a four-game winning streak and are coming off the fourth-highest scoring output in program history. The Captains scored 117 points against Southern Virginia in the CAC opener on Wednesday, eclipsing their previous high scoring mark under head coach Bill Broderick by one point. The 116-point effort came at Frostburg State last season, when Nicole Mitchell led the way with 38 points and the Captains cruised to a 116-89 victory. It was the fourth straight win over the Bobcats to start the series, including a 2-0 record against FSU last season.

This year, the Captains' lone senior, Camry Green, is leading the team in scoring and rebounding. In the road effort against Frostburg last season, Green poured in 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and this season, she has piled up six double-doubles in seven games to start the year. She needs just one rebound to become the 10th player in program history to register 800 boards in her career.

Pitching in behind Green is a talented freshman class, including second- and third-leading scorers Bailey Dufrene and Sam Porter. The pair are among a group of five first-year players averaging 14.6 minutes per game or more and all five rank among the top ten scorers on the team. Jalynn Ponzo has started all seven games and guards Makeda Wright and Makenzie Fancher round out the five rookies garnering the most minutes so far this year.

The Frostburg State women's team opened up the season with a double-overtime win over Westminster, but have suffered four straight losses to follow that thrilling opener. The most recent setback came in the Bobcats CAC opener, falling to Mary Washington at home, 66-30. Despite the overall record, the Bobcats feature one of the league's leading scorers, with Ronje' James pouring in 16.6 points per game. Defensively, the Bobcats are also one of the top teams in the conference in blocked shots per game, led by Jasmine Walker and her 2.0 swatted shots per contest.

Following the women's game, the CNU men will look to add to their modest two-game winning streak after opening the year 4-1 overall. Like the women's team, the Captains feature a young, talented core behind one senior, guard Mike Cherry. The Captains' top three-point shooter is averaging 10.0 points per game with seven treys in the first five games. Leading the way, though, has been first- and second-year players, including the team's leading scorers sophomore Tim Daly and freshman Marcus Carter. Daly is the league's second-leading scorer at 18.2 points per game, and also ranks in the top five in the conference in rebounding, hauling in 7.6 boards per game.

Carter leads a group of young players with 14.8 points per game so far this season, while fellow freshmen Logan Miller, Brendon Burrows and Aaron McFarland are also averaging double-figure minutes.

The Bobcats lost an overtime game to start the year and followed it up with another loss, but since the 0-2 start have raced out to four straight wins. That stretch included a pair of impressive road victories over nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon and defending conference champion Mary Washington. Four different players have led the team in scoring in their six games so far and the team is averaging over 70 points per game.

Frostburg is led by a pair of double-figure scorers as junior Nick Smoot and rookie Tyler Michael has taken the lead. Both have been efficient from long-range, knocking down 15 three-pointers in the first six games. Smoot is pouring in 16 points per game and Michael has added 13.8 per contest.

Both games will be available at CNUsports.com/live and the men's contest will be broadcast live in the Hampton Roads area on the CNU/Pepsi Radio network on Xtra 99.1 FM.
