CNU Basketball Hosts Southern Virginia In CAC Opening Doubleheader Wednesday Night

Women's Basketball Game Notes  ||  Men's Basketball Game Notes

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With tip times set for 5:30 & 7:30 pm, the Christopher Newport basketball teams will host Southern Virginia University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for the Captains. First, the CNU women, off to a 4-2 start, will host the 2-5 Knights, followed immediately by the CNU men, putting a 3-1 record on the line against the 1-5 Southern Virginia men's team.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both contests. Links can be found on either schedule at CNUsports.com, or directly at CNUsports.com/live. The men's contest will be broadcast live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network on Xtra 99.1 FM.

In the opener of the doubleheader, the Captains will be looking for their third straight win at home to start the sesaon. The CNU women dropped N.C. Wesleyan and Lynchburg in the Freeman Center last week after posting a 2-2 start on the road. The Knights are coming off their conference opener on Monday night against Marymount University, falling 82-57.

CNU has been led by senior forward Camry Green, averaging a double-double through the first six games. She leads the nation in double-doubles, and ranks second in the CAC in rebounding with 13.7 boards per game. The team leader in scoring as well, Green is pouring in 13.0 points per game, ranking seventh in the conference. Behind the lone senior, the Captains have featured a handful of talented rookies stepping up early in their career. Freshman Sam Porter has led the team in scoring three times already this season while classmate Jalynn Ponzo has started all six games.

Southern Virginia shares the ball extremely well, ranked 19th in the nation in assists per game. Rookie Marissa Belliston is leading the charge with 5.0 assists per game, while adding 8.3 points per game. Crystal Cleveland is nearly averaging a double-double in her third season, scoring 11.9 points and grabbing 8.3 rebounds per game. She shoots just 37.5% from the free-throw line, though, as the Knights have struggled at the charity stripe as a team, hitting just 44.2% of their shots with the clock stopped.

On the men's side, the Captains are off to a quick 3-1 start, including a 71-66 win over Haverford on the road on Sunday. It is the first game back at home for the Captains since the season opening victory against nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon over two weeks ago. Three players are averaging double figures in the early portion of the season, led by sophomore Tim Daly with 16.5 points per game. Rookie Marcus Carter (13.5 ppg) and senior Mike Cherry (10.0 ppg) are the other two players, while Daly also leads the team in rebounding at 6.8 boards per contest.

After opening the season with a thrilling triple-overtime win at Emory & Henry, the Knights have struggled to five straight losses, including a tight 65-60 setback in the conference opener versus Marymount last week. Southern Virginia also has three players in double figures through the first six games, as senior Preston Eaton (13.8 ppg), David Baety (11.2 ppg) and Wesley Evans (10.2 ppg) lead a solid offense. All three players shoot the three-ball well, hitting over 30% on the season with 1.0 or more made per game.

Wednesday's doubleheader includes the final home women's game before the holiday break, as CNU heads to Frostburg State and Wesley prior to the December intermission. The men will also travel to Frostburg State this weekend, but will host one more game prior to the holidays as they play host to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins on December 14.
