CNU Travels to Salisbury University for Holiday Break Twin Bill

SALISBURY, Md. -- Despite both University's having dismissed for the 2014 holiday break, there is still action on the calendar for the Christopher Newport and Salisbury basketball teams, as the two clash in a mid-week holiday doubleheader on Wednesday. The Captains will travel to Maryland for the final conference games of the 2014 year, with the CNU women taking on the 20th-ranked Sea Gulls at 3:00 pm, followed by the men's bout at approximately 5:00 pm.

Live stats will be provided by Salisbury University and a live video webcast can be found at CNUsports.com/live for both games. The men's contest will be presented live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network on Xtra 99.1 FM.

In the front end of the doubleheader, the Christopher Newport women's team, off to a 7-2 start overall and perfect 3-0 in league action, will face one of the stiffest tests remaining on the schedule. The Captains will meet up with the undefeated and nationally-ranked Sea Gulls on their home court, after Salisbury has opened the year with a perfect 7-0 start overall, 2-0 in conference play.

Senior Camry Green will lead the charge in the challenging matchup, entering Wednesday's contest as the reigning CAC Player of the Week. The team's leading scorer and rebounder picked up her seventh double-double of the season on Sunday, and ranks fourth in the nation in that category. Rookie Sam Porter is also coming off a double-double with her finest rebounding performance of the season, and ranks second on the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game.

As a team, the Captains have been a strong rebounding team this season, ranked 18th in the country in rebounding margin. Beating opponents on the glass by a +10.6 margin so far this season, CNU has thrived on second-chance opportunities, while also limiting opponent chances. The Captains are averaging 19.0 second-chance points per game compared to just 8.8 by their opponents.

Coming into Wednesday's game, the Salisbury women have been a force to start the season, winning their first seven games by an average of over 17 points per game. That mark ranks 35th in the country as the Sea Gulls have balanced a strong offense with a stingy defense, led by seniors Anna Hackett and Sarah Seipp. Hackett is one of the nation's leading scorers, and leads the CAC, with 20.4 points per game. Seipp is fourth in the league, pouring in 15.9 points per game, while also serving as the team's leading rebounder, with 8.7 grabs per game.

On the men's side, the Captains will look to bounce back after a tough one-point overtime loss to nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday as they take on the Sea Gulls at 5:00 pm. CNU is 5-2 overall with a 2-0 start in league play, while Salisbury is 3-4 overall with an 0-2 mark against the CAC.

CNU got a season-high 24 points from senior guard Mike Cherry against the Marlins, and the Captains' lone senior is averaging nearly 13 points per game. Rookie Marcus Carter is chipping in 15 points and over six rebounds per game, while sophomore Tim Daly, leading the team in scoring and rebounding, has been dealing with a knee injury and missed the team's last game.

The Captains have showcased tremendous depth this season, especially in the back court. Rookie guards Aaron McFarland and Logan Miller are among the top five leading scorers for CNU, and are both averaging more than 15 minutes per game.

Salisbury opened the season winners in two of their first three games before a three-game skid. The Sea Gulls are coming off win number three for the season, after a 19-point victory versus Washington College. All three starting front court players finished in double figures for Salisbury in that contest, led by 14 from Justin Witmer, who caught fire from deep with four three-pointers in the game. Four players are averaging double figures this season for the Sea Gulls, as Gordon Jeter, Kyle Savercool and Charles Porter join Witmer in the scoring column.

Full recaps will be available at CNUsports.com following the doubleheader. CNU will return to action on December 29 & 30 as the men host the Captains Shootout and the women take on Eastern Mennonite.
