HAVERFORD, Pa. – Closing out their early season three-game road swing , the Christopher Newport men's basketball a 71-66 victory over Haverford Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Captains record to 3-1 before opening conference play on Wednesday against Southern Virginia.
Following the Thanksgiving holiday, CNU didn't allow any holiday festivities to affect their play as
Mike Cherry's three-point basket 26 seconds into the game staked the visitors to a lead they would not relinquish during the first half. In fact, baskets from five different Captains in the first ten minutes gave CNU an 11-point lead.
Sophomore,
Tim Daly collected 10 points and 5 rebounds while leading the CNU charge in the first-half. While Daly led the way, several players off the bench made baskets during the first 20 minutes. Freshman,
Aaron McFarland,
Brendon Burrows,
Jordan Roach and
Logan Miller combined for 14 first half points. A Daly layup with 5:38 to play in the first gave CNU a 14 point advantage at 30-16, their largest lead of the game.
At intermission, Daly and his teammates led the Fords 35-25.
The Fords would not go quietly playing in Gooding Arena. On his home floor, senior guard Gibby Graves poured in 11 second-half points including a layup that culminated a 10 point run to open the half and tied the score at 35.
The Fords run tied the game for all of six seconds before CNU freshman,
Marcus Carter streaked to the other end of the floor after Graves' basket and was fouled laying the ball in to regain the lead.
Carter would end up collecting 17 second-half points en-route to matching Daly with a game-high 18 total points. Carter also added 7 rebounds and a pair of assists.
Cherry added five second-half assists to only one turnover while running the Captains offense in the second frame. Burrows scored 9 points and collected 7 rebounds while leading the bench in both categories.
CNU had a commanding edge on the glass out rebounding the Fords 48-29 and capitalized on the advantage with 21 second-chance points to Haverford's one.
