NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's basketball team is heading back on the road this weekend, albeit just down the street, literally, as the Captains (1-2) take on Newport News Apprentice School (2-1) at 4:00 pm Sunday. Live stats of the contest will be available, as the Captains look to bounce back after back-to-back losses while taking on a Builders team who picked up a 101-50 win on Saturday afternoon.
Christopher Newport opened the season with a 12-point win at Guilford before falling to Roanoke and Bridgewater in their next two contests. The four-game road trip to start the year ends close to home, but in the Apprentice Athletic Center in downtown Newport News.
Senior
Camry Green is off to a torrid start for the Captains, posting three straight double-doubles to open her final season. She is averaging 15.0 points and 15.3 rebounds per game while playing in nearly 29 minutes per contest. The freshman class is off to a solid start, as rookies
Bailey Dufrene and
Sam Porter have each chipped in double-figure scoring efforts. Dufrene is second on the team in scoring, with 11.5 points per game, and Porter is coming off a strong performance at Bridgewater, with 17 points and 5 steals.
The Builders are coming off a season where they reached the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Semifinals with a 22-5 overall record. Apprentice returns six players from that squad and are off to a 2-1 start with a triple-digit scoring output against Penn State Fayette on Saturday. Four players are averaging double figures for the Apprentice School in the early going.
