Camry Green collected her third straight double-double and rookie
Sam Porter scored a team-high 17 points, but Bridgewater College (1-0) held off the Captains (1-2) with a last-second layup on the road Wednesday night, 61-59. Porter tied the game with 15 seconds remaining, but Cassidy Burkholder knocked down the game-winning bucket for the Eagles with 0.4 seconds left on the game clock.
Neither team would lead by double figures in the hotly contested matchup that saw both teams score 34 points in the paint and a combined 50 points off of turnovers.
The last second drive to the basket was set up by a nice comeback by CNU after falling behind by nine in the second half. The two teams traded baskets for the first five minutes of the second frame before a pair of free-throws by Heather Cantrell gave Bridgewater a game-high nine-point lead with 15:06 remaining, 46-37.
On the next three CNU possessions, though, the Captains would dominate the offensive glass and go on a modest 6-0 roll to cut the lead back to three, 46-43. Green had a pair of boards on the offensive end and
Makeda Wright also grabbed one in the spurt, while Porter chipped in a pair of made free-throws.
The run would continue after a made free-throw by Jessica Lam halted the scoreless streak by Bridgewater, as Wright knocked down a jumper and junior
Jordan Miller sank a three-pointer with 11:09 left to give CNU its first lead of the second half, 48-47. The trey capped an 11-1 run over four minutes of clock as the Captains looked to regain momentum.
The final ten minutes saw both teams teeter in front, with no team leading by more than three points the rest of the way. Back-to-back layups from Oshene Kelly and Jessica Lam were answered by the Captains freshmen, as Porter and Wright dropped in a pair of layups to re-take the lead. Twice more the lead would shift before CNU freshman
Jalynn Ponzo knocked down a free-throw with 1:15 remaining to knot the score at 57.
With less than a minute remaining, Jessi Strom found Kelly in the paint for a layup to take a 59-57 lead over CNU with 36 seconds left. Without a timeout, the Captains raced down the floor and Porter got an open look for two in the paint, tying the game back up at 59. CNU did a great job defensively after a timeout, locking up Burkholder in a double-team forcing another timeout with four seconds remaining. On the next play, however, the Eagles junior scoring leader knocked down the contested layup for the game-winning play.
Camry Green scored 10 points in the first half, and finished with 16 for the Captains up front, while grabbing 12 rebounds. Her third straight double-double to start the season gives her seven in her last eight games played including the postseason last year.
Freshman forward
Sam Porter had a team-high 17 points off the bench, knocking down 7-of-12 attempts from the field while chipping in four rebounds and five steals.
As a team, the Captains struggled from long-range, knocking down just one of 18 attempts from deep, dropping the overall field goal percentage for the game to 33.8% (25-74). Bridgewater took twice as many free-throws and converted at an 70% (21-30) clip while CNU managed a 53.3% (8-15) performance from the charity stripe.
The CNU defense allowed only four Bridgewater players to hit a field goal in the contest, but Burkholder led all players with 20 points and Kelly added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, as the two combined to go 15-of-27 from the field.
The Captains round out a four-game road swing to open this season this weekend as they make the trek down Warwick Blvd. to take on the Newport News Apprentice School (1-1). Tip is set for 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 23 against the Lady Builders.
