LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer season came to a heart-breaking end Saturday night, as the Captains (12-4-4) suffered a tough 1-0 overtime loss in the NCAA First Round. CNU fell to Stevenson University (11-5-5), who now advances to take on top-seeded host Lynchburg College.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the two teams battled into extra time, where Stevenson converted on a one-on-one opportunity from Meaghan Williams.
CNU held a slight 15-12 advantage in total shots, led by sophomore and leading scorer
Victoria Perry with eight total attempts in the game. She led all players with three shots on-goal.Â
Both teams traded runs during the game, forcing both goalkeepers to work for the scoreless draw through regulation. Stevenson's Tiffany McKee made a big play in the second half, cutting off a shot opportunity for the Captains offense after a great ball by junior
Lindsay Mondloch found a pair of CNU forwards racing into the box. Then, in overtime, she made picked up her eighth save of the game in the first minute, stopping Perry's third try on-target.
CNU sophomore goalkeeper
Haley Casanova started for the Captains, making six saves, including an imperative stop with less than 30 seconds remaining on a header on-frame by Kellen Wittman. In overtime, she also made a big save in the 95th minute on a shot by Allie Ondrejcak.Â
Senior
Joy Piirto took three shots in the game, putting two on frame, while fellow senior
Kelsey Thomas also put one shot on-target.
Sam Rabinek and
Shaydah Naraghi rounded out the attempts on-goal for CNU, as five different players registered shots on-goal.Â
The Captains' season concludes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. CNU finishes out the year with an overall record of 12-4-4 and in two years under head coach
Dan Weiler, the Captains overall record is now 26-8-6 for a winning percentage of 72.5%. Christopher Newport made its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance including its second under Coach Weiler.
