The Captains improved to 10-3-2 overall, while running their undefeated league record to 6-0-0.
CNU controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Saints 33-1 in the game, spread evenly between the two halves. The Captains held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks and put 20 of their 33 attempts on-frame in the contest.
Sophomore
Victoria Perry would waste little time igniting the CNU attack, scoring in the first three minutes of the game. She picked up her sixth game-winning goal of the season when she raced through the right side of the Marymount defense, dribbling between a pair of defenders before connecting on a mid-range shot inside the box. Her attempt tickled the twine on the left side of the goal, past the diving attempt by Marymount goalkeeper Holly Wenger.
Just over ten minutes later, CNU capitalized on its second goal of the first half when senior
Joy Piirto set up rookie
Kimmie Kerstiens. Piirto lofted a high-arcing pass over the last defender and Kerstiens blazed past her defender, chesting the ball to her feet for a one-on-one chance with Wenger. Her shot from the left side found the right side of the goalmouth from about eight yards out, picking up her third goal of the season.
Despite dominating the pressure offensively, CNU would only score twice in the opening stanza. The Captains outshot the Saints, 17-0, in the first 45 minutes, en route to a 2-0 halftime lead.
After the intermission, it would again be the second-year scoring leader for the Captains to get things started. In the 58th minute, Perry converted on a corner kick to increase the lead to three. Junior
Lindsay Mondloch launched the corner kick to the center of the box where sophomore
Sam Rabinek headed the ball toward the back post; rookie
Kira Warner trapped the ball and shuffled it inside for Perry, who blasted a shot top shelf for the score.
The script followed like deja vu, as Kerstiens answered the call for the second goal of the half as she did in the first. This time, in the 66th minute, the play was started by senior
Sarah Perrett. A perfect ball into the right corner put Perry onsides for a clean look at a cross into the box. Kerstiens got to it first and slotted it past Wenger to give the Captains a 4-0 lead.
The next tally came off one of the best set pieces of the season for CNU, as senior defender
Priscilla Harrison lofted a pass from just inside midfield down into the center of the box. Rookie
Alexis Haycraft read the pass perfectly, lowered her forehead and directed a perfect shot in for her first career goal.
Finally, the six-goal outburst was rounded out with less than two minutes remaining when Piirto collected her sixth goal of the season. The 2013 All-Region midfielder received a pass from sophomore
Allie McWilliams down the right side of the box, and powered a shot past Wenger from about 10 yards out.
Piirto's three-point performance runs her season total to 14, ranking third on the team despite missing five games to an injury earlier this season. Perrett, Piirto and Harrison all factored into goals on their Senior Night, while all seven seniors played well in the game. With Harrison, defenders
Kelsey Thomas,
Erin O'Shaughnessy, and
Mary D'Alesandro helped secure the shutout, the seventh of the season. Offensively,
Caitlyn Pabst took a pair of shots, including one that tested Wenger.
The Marymount goalkeeper finished the game with 14 saves, the second-highest total of the season for a CNU opponent. Catherine Powell took the lone shot for the Saints, hitting a hard shot wide left of the goal.
Haley Casanova picked up her third shutout of the season while the offense did all the work in front of her. Perry put all six of her shots on-frame, leading the offensive night with two goals and an assist. Kerstiens added two goals on five shots, with three on-goal.
Christopher Newport is back in action with their final home regular season game of the season on Wednesday, October 22 when they host the University of Mary Washington at 7:00 pm.
