ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a close game between regionally-ranked foes, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team would suffer a 2-0 setback on the road to Elizabethtown College (9-3-0) on Sunday afternoon. The Captains fall to 8-3-2 overall and saw a four-game win streak snapped after a goal scored in the opening minutes held up as the winner in a hotly contested matchup.

Coming into Sunday's tilt, the Captains were ranked sixth in the South-Atlantic regional rankings and were taking on the eighth-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic, with both teams riding modest win streaks. The hosts got on the board just under two minutes into the match as Trisha Clark scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist by Lauren Berry. Berry's pass into the middle of the box found Clark for an open look from about 10 yards out.

After the early tally, the two teams battled for the duration, with CNU holding a significant advantage in attempts on-frame. The Captains offense fought for an equalizer, forcing Dana Robidoux, the Blue Jays starting keeper, to make seven saves in the match. Despite a 6-4 advantage in shots on-frame in the first half for the home team, it was CNU that held a 4-1 edge in shots on-goal. Rookie Kimmie Kerstiens led the attack, putting a pair of shots on-goal.

In the second half, the Captains continued to claw for a game-tying goal, bursting out of the half with four close shots in the first ten minutes of the second stanza. Kerstiens and senior Joy Piirto each had a pair, including a shot from the rookie off a corner kick by Lindsay Mondloch that went just wide left. As the clock continued to wind down, the Captains sent more players forward, but the Blue Jays defense held CNU off the board.

In the 86th minute, Elizabethtown picked up a corner kick taken by Maddie Burkhardt. Her pass into the middle of the box met the head of Elyse Koterwas, directing the shot into the upper left ninety for an insurance goal late in the match.

Elizabethtown held a slight 13-12 advantage in total shots, but the Captains managed a 7-3 edge in shots on-frame. Kerstiens and Victoria Perry each had a pair of shots on-goal for the Captains, who were shut out for just the third time this season.

With the non-conference slate now closed, the Captains will return focus to the Capital Athletic Conference season, returning to Captains Field for a Wednesday night matchup with St. Mary's College (Md.) at 7:30 pm. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader with the men's teams, matching up at 5:30 pm.
