MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Christopher Newport had its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday, losing 51-31 at Huntingdon College. The loss drops the Captains to 3-3 overall and leaves CNU in a four-way tie for first place in the USA South Athletic Conference at 3-1.
Huntingdon, now 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the USA South, never trailed in the first-place showdown, jumping to a 21-3 lead after the first quarter and a 31-17 advantage at the half. The Hawks put the game away in the third quarter with two touchdowns that increased their lead to 45-17, largest margin of the day.
Sophomore quarterback Luke Bailey led the Hawks attack, throwing for four scores and running for another. He finished the day 20 of 27 for 371 yards passing.
"We just couldn't stop them all day," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said following the defeat. "We didn't play well in any area today and when you play like that, you get beat by twenty."
Sophomore running back Daquan Davis caught two touchdown passes for the Captains, both in the second quarter and both from senior quarterback Marcus Morrast, who saw limited playing time in the second half due to illness. Davis finished the day with 55 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving.
Morrast was 12 of 24 for 141 yards before leaving early in the second half, and was replaced by junior Arsaiah Robinson, who threw two fourth quarter touchdowns. Robinson connected with sophomore Taylor Loudon on a 16-yard touchdown pass and went to junior Joe Jardine for a four-yard scoring hookup.
CNU's defense allowed 564 yards for the day and Huntingdon scored on eight of 11 possessions. The Hawks recorded scores on each of their first four possessions of each half, and punted only once all day.
The matchup was the first ever between the schools, and was played on a hot and humid day at Samford Stadium in front of 1,764 fans. The Hawks have now won three straight games.
Christopher Newport is now in a four-way tie for the top spot in the USA South with Huntingdon, North Carolina Wesleyan, and Maryville. The Captains return to action next Saturday at Averett with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
