18th-ranked Men's Basketball Opens 2014 With Home Game Saturday vs. Frostburg State

Capital Athletic Conference Matchup Follows Women's Game...Doubleheader Starts at 2 p.m.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Captains of Christopher Newport open 2014 Saturday with a Capital Athletic Conference home game vs. Frostburg State. Tipoff time at the Freeman Center is set for 4 p.m.

CNU is 9-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, and riding a six-game winning streak. The Captains are ranked 18th in the nation, and coming off a 76-70 home win over Pitt-Greensburg Monday night. CNU shot poorly from the field but made up for it at the foul line to hold off the Bobcats. Now it's on to a different team of Bobcats.

Frostburg State has not won yet in 2013-14, and the Bobcats are 0-9 entering play Saturday. Frostburg State is 0-3 in the Capital, and coming off an 82-74 non-conference loss at Roanoke Monday night.

The game will be the 12th meeting all-time, and the first as fellow conference members. CNU leads the all-time series with the Bobcats, 7-4.

Senior Tra Benefield and junior Mike Cherry both tallied 17 points in Monday's win over Pitt-Greensburg. Benefield, a pre-season All-America selection, is now averaging 20.0 points per game and is just five points shy of 1,500 for his career. He is 8th on the all-time CNU scoring list, 113 points behind Davon Barton. Cherry, who is scoring 15.6 points per game, has 926 for his career with the Captains.
