NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Welcoming Wesley College to Captains Field for the second time this season, it will be the first time the Christopher Newport men's soccer team ever plays in the Capital Athletic Conference. On Saturday night, CNU (5-2-1) will play host to the Wolverines (3-4-2) at 7:00 pm, with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com.
The Captains have bounced back nicely from a tough start to the season, winning four straight games to improve their record to 5-2-1 overall. In head coach
Steve Shaw's 18th season, the offense has started to click, averaging 2.5 goals per game on the current win streak.
Leading the charge has been 2012 Conference Player of the Year
Jalon Brown. While in the USA South, Brown posted one of the finest seasons in program history; this year, he will contend for that honor in a new league, but has not seen his production take a hit so far this season. The junior forward is the league leader in goals scored and points, with six tallies and 15 total points already this season.
Senior
Caleb Lewis is coming off a stellar game against Lynchburg College on Wednesday, scoring the gamewinning goal and assisting on two more to factor into all three scores in the 3-1 win. Lewis increased his team high total of helpers to four, giving him six points on the season.
In goal, senior
Sean Killion has taken the lion's share of the minutes, and boasts a 0.59 goals against average with three shutouts this year.
The Wolverines are making their second trip to Captains Field after playing in the 2013 Joe Pombriant/CNU Soccer Classic to open the season. The weekend wasn't successful for Wesley, going 0-2 against Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan, but since then, the conference foes ran a streak of unbeatens to five before two more losses. Goalkeeper Mark Mattern has been named the CAC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has helped a stout Wolverines defense hold opponents to just eight goals so far this season.
The game will kickoff at 7:00 pm at Captains Field, and fans that are unable to attend can watch the game live in an HD video webcast at CNUsports.com. Live stats are also available.
