25th-ranked Captains Host Shenandoah Saturday Night at POMOCO Stadium

CNU, 2-0 for the first time ever, takes on 1-1 Hornets during Family Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Captains of Christopher Newport are 2-0 for the first time in program history. This week they jumped into the Top 25 for the first time in the regular season since 2008.

Saturday night at POMOCO Stadium, Head Coach Matt Kelchner's team looks to continue its early-season surge as the Captains host the Hornets of Shenandoah University. It's the final non-conference game of the season for CNU. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m, and the game will be a part of Family Weekend festivities at Christopher Newport.

The Captains are coming off wins over Salisbury on the road (17-10) and last Saturday's 17-7 home win over Hampden-Sydney in front of a record 6,675 fans at POMOCO Stadium.

"Last week was amazing," Kelchner said. "The atmosphere, the crowd, the win over a very good opponent. Now we have to carry that momentum with us and play well against Shenandoah."

The Hornets are 1-1 and coming off a 43-29 road win at Ferrum last Saturday. SU is led by a new coach this season, Scott Yoder, who took over a program that went 1-9 a year ago.

"They have the most balanced offense we've seen so far this season," Kelchner continued. "They've got a whole new scheme and philosophy with a new coach...they will definitely be a challenge for us."

It will be the 13th meeting of the schools, with the Captains holding a 9-3 edge in the series. CNU has won the last eight matchups.

The Captains have been led by their defense through the first two games, allowing just 17 points so far this season. Senior linebacker Evan Moog has been outstanding, leading the squad in tackles with 28 in the two victories. Moog has been named the USA South's Defensive Player of the Week both weeks.

Tickets will be available at POMOCO Stadium Saturday night. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
