NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport's football squad opens at home Saturday night, and the Captains will have their hands full as they take on Hampden-Sydney. Kickoff time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium.
Both teams won their openers last week and enter play 1-0. The Captains won a thriller, beating Salisbury with a touchdown pass with only 15 seconds left, 17-10. Hampden-Sydney crushed Averett at home last week, 42-12.
"We are really looking forward to the home opener," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said. "For our freshmen, this is their first real taste of the POMOCO Stadium experience. We've enjoyed a lot of success on our home field over the years, and this will be a great challenge for us."
The teams met last year for the first time ever, and CNU will look to avenge a 42-20 defeat at Hampden-Sydney. Tigers quarterback Nash Nance, now a junior, threw for five scores in last year's game against the Captains. Last week vs. Averett, Nance threw for four scores and also ran for two more.
"Nance is one of the best quarterbacks our program has ever faced," Kelchner continued. "We are very much aware of what he is capable of and have to do a good job on him defensively."
CNU quarterback, junior
Marcus Morrast, threw two fourth quarter touchdown passes last week to propel the Captains. Morrast hit junior receiver
Rudy Rudolph on a 28-yard scoring play on the first play of the fourth quarter. He later connected with sophomore running back
Paul Dukes from 18 yards out for the game-winner with 15 seconds left.
The Captains have a 42-19 all-time record at POMOCO Stadium for a home winning mark of almost 69 percent.
Gates will open at 6 p.m. Saturday night. Tickets will be available at POMOCO Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and live audio and video will be available at www.CNUsports.com
