NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 8th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team will wrap up its home schedule with Senior Day on Thursday at 3:00 pm, taking on the Newport News Apprentice School (25-4). The Captains (24-8-1) will honor five seniors in a pregame ceremony, including
Christopher McDougal, who was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week.
McDougal ran his hit streak to seven games with five straight two-hit performances last week, driving in nine runs and scoring seven times. He hit .556 (10-for-18) with three extra-base hits, including a three-run home run against Gallaudet. He has helped lead an offence that is hitting. 297 as a team, scoring 6.8 runs per game.
Justin Weaver, hitting .392, is the team leader offensively ranking second in the nation in runs batted in with 35. Junior
Billy Steel has crossed the plate a nation-leading 37 times, and is hitting .356 with 15 extra-base hits.
On the hill, the Captains bullpen continues to post dominant innings for head coach
John Harvell, led by senior closer
Ryan Fleischmann. The right-hander has given up just five hits this season, posting an ERA of 0.53 with a record 11 saves.
Thursday's game against the Apprentice School will begin at 3:00 pm. The Builders are ranked No. 1 in the USCAA and boast an impressive 25-4 overall mark this season. They have won seven straight games, led by a dominant pitching staff that has recorded an ERA of 2.40 this year. Solid defense backs up an offense that is averaging nearly 7.5 runs per game, with a team batting average of .298.
