ASHLAND, Va. -- In their first action since the USA South Tournament, the 17th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team suffered an 11-5 loss on the road versus Randolph-Macon College (17-13-1). The Yellow Jackets stung CNU (28-12-1) despite a 4-for-4 performance from sophomore outfielder
Preston Grissom, with a pair of doubles.
Rookie
Kyle Corwin hit his first career home run in the top of the second to put CNU on top, 1-0. Then, Grissom helped get the Captains out to a 3-0 lead after the third with a run-scoring double and then a scamper home on a double by
Billy Steel.
The lead would last just one inning, however, as Randolph-Macon would even the score in the bottom of the 4th. Travis Lodge stepped in with the bases loaded and roped a double to left center that would clear the bases, tying the score at 3-3. The home team would then take advantage of two sixth-inning errors to score six runs and take a decided 9-3 advantage.
Corwin added another RBI when he singled home
Justin Weaver in the 8th, and CNU tacked on one more in the ninth but were unable to erase the deficit.
Grissom wrapped up a strong day at the plate with a pair of doubles, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Corwin was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored on his first collegiate home run.
Junior
Austin Chrismon (7-4) suffered the loss after 5.1 innings of work, allowing nine runs, just three earned, while striking out five.
Matt Verdillo and
Adam Emerson finished out the game on the hill, striking out six in the final 2.2 innings of work.
Sid Harvey (2-0) earned the win in relief for Randolph-Macon, while Tim Benjamin led the offensive attach with three hits in five at-bats. Four Macon batters finished with multi-hit performances, while Benjamin, Lodge, Zach Broaddus and Jake Fletcher had two RBI each.
The Captains will close out the regular season on Thursday, April 18 as they travel to the Newport News Apprentice School for a 4:00 pm first pitch.
