WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Behind a season-high 18 hits, the eighth-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team blew past Gallaudet University (8-14) on Sunday, 14-5. The Captains had six extra-base hits in support of starter Bryan Bierlein (6-2), and CNU scored in all but one inning against the Bison.

Every starter registered at least one hit, and the fireworks started early. After an Andy Viands walk to lead off the game, he moved up on a Preston Grissom sacrifice bunt. Billy Steel followed with a single, but the big hit came off the bat of senior Christopher McDougal. The first baseman stepped in and blasted his second home of the year, a three-run job to put the Captains on top early.

Rookie Kyle Corwin added RBI hits in both the second and third innings, with a double to plate Travis Younger and a single scoring Jacob Houston. His second RBI put the Captains on top, 6-0, after three innings of play.

Bierlein gave up just one hit and two walks in the first five innings of action for the Captains, en route to his sixth win of the season. He finished with 7.0 innings pitched, two earned runs allowed and eight strikeouts.

CNU scored four more runs in the middle innings, as Grissom picked up an RBI on a single, followed by sacrifice flies from Houston, Steel and Younger. Justin Weaver tripled home a run in the seventh and then some of the Captains substitutions got into the action. Rookie Joey Plesce picked up his first career RBI with a single in the eighth and backup shortstop Justin Garber walked home a run later in the inning.

Kyle Corwin led the Captains with a three-hit performance, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while four more Captains finished with two hits apiece. McDougal's three-run homer highlighted a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and three RBI.

CNU returns to action on Thursday, April 4 for Senior Day against the Apprentice School (22-4), the top-ranked team in the USCAA, at 3:00 pm.
