CNU Men’s Lacrosse Falls to York, 17-5, on Saturday Afternoon

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team fell behind early and could never recover as the Captains dropped a 17-5 decision to York (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.

Adam Abbate and John Thompson each came through with a goal and assist for the Captains, while Alex Barber scored a pair to pace the CNU attack. Brenden Dwyer and Michael Mabry also forced a pair of turnovers on the defensive end.

With the setback, Christopher Newport is now 5-6 on the season. York is 9-2 overall.

The Spartans wasted little time opening up their lead as the hosts rolled out to a 4-0 edge during the first eight minutes of action. Following a York penalty, which gave the Captains a man-up advantage, CNU responded. With numbers on his side, Barber lit up the scoreboard with a dart at 5:20 in the first period.

Unfortunately, that three-goal deficit was as close as Christopher Newport would come. After York ended the first with one final goal in the last few seconds of the period, the squad broke the game wide open in the second. Andrew Gamble and Tyler Hutson each scored twice during the frame to lead a five-goal surge that lifted the Spartans to a 10-1 lead heading into halftime.

Following the break, York kept the momentum. The hosts scored the first two goals of the quarter before Barber struck again for the Captains following a nice pass by Abbate. From there, CNU played pretty even with the Spartans but could never mount a comeback while staring at the double-digit deficit.

At the tail end of the third period, Abbate and Parker Thompson each collected goals before John Thompson added a dart in the fourth to cap off the scoring by CNU.

Overall, York out-shot the Captains, 41-27, and held a 42-29 advantage in ground balls. The Spartans also won 18 of the game's 26 faceoffs. Caleb Abney posted seven saves for York, while Andy McGregor and Mark Hargrove both matched that effort for CNU.

Christopher Newport will return to action on April 3 for a battle against Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
