No. 8 CNU Takes on Mary Washington Wednesday Afternoon

Captains host Eagles in non-conference action

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The eighth-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team returns to Captains Park for five of their next six games, starting with a Wednesday afternoon tilt against the University of Mary Washington (14-8). The Captains (20-7-1) will toss the first pitch against the Eagles at 3:00 pm, kicking off a run of four home games this week. 

CNU has been led offensively by junior Billy Steel, getting on-base at a clip of .485, while hitting .347 so far this season. He currently leads the nation in scoring, with 30 runs scored, and has been driven in often by the Captains leading hitter, junior Justin Weaver. The outfield transfer is hitting .392 in his first year with CNU, while driving in a team-best 28 runs. Sophomore Preston Grissom has added a fine offensive season in his first year as the starter in center field, hitting .353 with 17 stolen bases and 22 runs scored.

On the hill, senior Ryan Fleischmann continues to anchor a dominant bullpen that has led to nine saves this year for the right-hander. He now has 27 career saves, tied for eighth all-time at the NCAA Div. III level. In front of him, setup men Richard Lindsay (0.00 ERA in 15.0 IP) and Matt Verdillo (23 K in 15.2 IP) continue to mow down opposing batters, while Fleischmann's .098 batting average against is a team-low. 

Mary Washington comes into Wednesday's game winners in seven of their last eight games. The Eagles are being led by senior first baseman Seth Jordan, hitting .413 with 17 RBI.
