NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Freshman attack
Alex Barber (Fairfax, Va.) poured in six goals and added an assist for Christopher Newport, leading the Captains men's lacrosse team to a convincing win over Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Monday, 21-5. CNU improves to 4-2 overall this season with the victory, dropping the Devils to 1-4.
Barber finished just shy of the CNU record for goals in a game, set by Andrew Evans with seven in 2008. Still, the young freshman posted what was easily the best individual performance of the season for a CNU player.
He wouldn't get started until the second period, however, as his teammates built a 4-0 lead in the first. Junior
Aaron Chrzaszcz scored twice in the first 15 minutes, including an unassisted tally with just 15 seconds remaining.
Gregory Limon and
Parker Thompson each scored, while
John Thompson and
Billy Crist picked up helpers in the period.
Barber caught fire in the second period, scoring a hat trick in less than a four-minute period. He notched the first goal with 8:32 left until half, unassisted in front of the goal. Then, after FDU-Florham notched their first goal of the game, Barber answered with one at 5:55 and another at 4:38.
John Thompson assisted on two of the strikes, and then set up Chrzaszcz's third goal of the game with just 3:57 remaining.
Senior
Ari Elgort put the punctuation mark on 9-1 run to start the game when he scored seven seconds later. After winning the face-off, Elgort streaked down the center of the field, by one defender and shot low for the goal.
At halftime, the Captains led 11-2 and held a decided advantage in shots-on-goal, 14-6.
After the break, Chrzaszcz would quickly add his fourth and final goal of the game on Barber's lone assist. Then, the rookie would tack on two of the next three goals as CNU pulled ahead 15-2. The Captains blanked FDU-Florham in the third, increasing the lead to 18-2 headed into the final quarter.
Six different Captains tickled the twine on the final six goals for CNU, including the first career goal by
Connor Tapscott and second career tally by sophomore
Garrison Ernst. Seniors
Jake Myers and
Kyle Pasta were also in for the Captains, picking up late goals.
Senior goalkeeper
Andy McGregor played a terrific game between the pipes, allowing just four goals and making seven saves.
Christopher Newport kicked off a four-game homestand with the win, and will return to the field on Thursday, March 14 against Ithaca at 7:00 pm.
