LaGRANGE, Ga. -- The 21st-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (15-4, 8-2) will look to shake off the first back-to-back losses since 2010-11 when it travels in to face the LaGrange College Panthers (9-10, 2-8) on Saturday afternoon. With just four games remaining, head coach
John Krikorian will look to maintain its lead in the USA South Athletic Conference standings heading into the conference tournament. Right now, CNU is at the top, just one game ahead of Ferrum College in the standings and 2.5 games ahead of Greensboro and Methodist. The Captains will close the season with a home game against N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday, Feb. 13, and a road swing at Averett and Ferrum the following weekend.
First, however, comes Saturday's game against LaGrange, coming off a 58-54 win against Covenant in non-conference action on Wednesday. Earlier this season, CNU held on for an 86-76 win against the Panthers in the Freeman Center, but LaGrange was without the services of leading scorer Kyron Anderson, who has returned. Anderson is averaging 15.8 points per game, with three assists and two steals per. Patrick Dugger and Marcus Vaughn are each averaging double figures as well, while Mark Wagner poured in a team-high 15 points against CNU earlier this season.
The Captains got a career-high 34 points from junior
Tra Benefield, who now ranks 17th all-time in CNU scoring with 1,157 career points. Benefield is averaging 19.2 points per game with 8.2 rebounds as one of the league's most dynamic players. Rookie
Evan Thorpe has come on strong in the second half of the season, averaging 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds in over 20 minutes per game. Over the last four games, Thorpe is averaging nearly 14 points per game to gow ith 7.5 rebounds.
